What is Chenille fabric?

By January 15, 2023Uncategorized

Chenille is a type of fabric that has a fuzzy, velvety surface created by tufts of yarn that protrude from the fabric’s base. The word “chenille” comes from the French word for “caterpillar,” which the tufts of yarn resemble.

The origins of chenille fabric can be traced back to 18th century France, where it was first used to make tufted bedspreads and other decorative textiles. It was not until the late 19th century, however, that chenille began to be mass-produced and used for a wide variety of products, such as clothing, rugs, and upholstery.

Chenille became particularly popular in the United States during the 1920s and 1930s, when it was used to make a wide range of decorative items, including bedspreads, curtains, and furniture upholstery. The fabric’s soft texture and vibrant colors made it a popular choice for home decor.

In the mid-20th century, chenille fell out of fashion and was mostly used for making textiles for children’s clothing and bedding. However, in recent years, chenille has seen a resurgence in popularity as a decorative fabric, particularly in the form of throw blankets and pillows.

Chenille fabric is now made from a variety of fibers, including cotton, acrylic, and polyester, and is used for a wide range of products, from clothing and bedding to home decor and upholstery.

It’s worth noting that chenille is not as common as other fabrics and can be difficult to find in stores.
